Seeding a new Lawn
(Fall: September and October are the most desirable months to seed and late February through March is second choice)
- Prepare the soil - grade and remove rocks and other debris
- Till 3-4" deep. Work in lime if needed.(1 bg of lime per 1000 sq ft)
- Allow soil to settle. Fill in holes from high spots.
- Shallowly cultivate and work in a starter type fertilizer.
- Seed with desired seed at recommended rate.
- Rake seed lightly into soil.
- Cover lightly with straw.
- Water lightly and frequently until established.
- The 1st summer your new lawn will not tolerate drought conditions. Make sure your lawn gets water 2 to 3 times per week. Your goal is 1" of water per week. Water early in the morning to help avoid brown patch.
Overseeding an existing Lawn
- Mow existing grasses short.
- The best and easiest solution to overseeding is to rent a slit seeder from us for best possible results.
- Slice the soil 1/4-1/2" deep.
- Remove any thatch or other debris.
- Seed with desired seed at recommended rate.
- Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer so it will not burn your grass
- Lightly cover seeds with straw.
- Water lightly and frequently until established.
Sodding a Lawn
- Prepare soil as if for seeding. Make the final grade of the soil about 1" lower than the surrounding areas.
- Spread fertilizer and moisten the soil. Sod should be laid on damp soil.
- Place first strip of sod along a flat edge and unroll it. Stagger each row of sod, similar to a brick layer's pattern, so that none of the joints are in a straight line.
- To prevent drying, each piece should be placed as close as possibe to the other. Do not overlap. Press the edges of the sod firmly together.
- Cut pieces of sod with a knife to fit along irregular areas.
- After the sod has been placed, go over it with a roller to ensure good contact between sod roots and underlying soil. There must not be air pockets under the sod because this would cause the roots to dry out and die.
- Water the sod thoroughly.
- Continue watering sod daily until it is established.
